Write the ANCOVA story

Move from a real-world fairness problem to a purpose statement, a research question, and the correct statistical test. ANCOVA belongs in the story when groups are compared on a continuous outcome after controlling for a continuous starting difference.

Programs may appear successful because they serve students who already perform well. Programs serving students with greater needs may be undervalued, which can misdirect resources and reinforce educational inequity.

Purpose statement

Compare adjusted post-program scores

The study compares high school students' post-program reading comprehension scores across after-school tutoring, Saturday academy, and summer bridge programs while controlling for pre-program reading performance. ANCOVA tests whether program differences remain after baseline readiness is adjusted.

Ask the adjusted comparison directly

After controlling for pretest reading comprehension scores, is there a statistically significant difference in posttest reading comprehension scores based on enrichment program?

One-Way ANOVA, Two-Way ANOVA, and ANCOVA all compare group outcomes, but they answer different versions of the story.

One-Way ANOVA

Core idea

Method choice is part of the research story. One-Way ANOVA checks group differences, Two-Way ANOVA checks group differences and interactions, and ANCOVA checks whether group differences remain after a continuous background variable is held constant.
