Writing ANCOVA Results in APA Style
APA reporting is the final translation step. You already know what the analysis means; now you will turn that reasoning into a clear paragraph that names the variables, reports the adjusted group test, and summarizes justified follow-ups.
Report the adjusted story, not every number SPSS prints. The main group effect anchors the paragraph.
Keep the story focused
Report what answers the research question
A strong ANCOVA paragraph is selective. It identifies the model, centers the adjusted group effect, and includes follow-ups only when the overall test justifies them.
Report F(df1, df2), the p-value, and partial η². This is the main result.
When there are three or more groups and the omnibus result is significant, report the correction and which groups differ.
Usually leave out
The intercept, every SPSS table, every p-value, and raw descriptives that do not help explain the adjusted conclusion.
One complete model

The chapter scenario compares three academic enrichment programs on posttest reading comprehension while controlling for pretest reading comprehension.
Model ANCOVA Results paragraph
An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) compared posttest reading comprehension scores across After School, Saturday Academy, and Summer Bridge while controlling for pretest reading comprehension. After adjustment, Program had a statistically significant effect on PostTest, F(2, 56) = 40.06, p < .001, partial η² = .589. Bonferroni-adjusted comparisons showed that Summer Bridge had higher adjusted scores than Saturday Academy and After School, and Saturday Academy had higher adjusted scores than After School, all p < .001. Overall, program differences remained after accounting for baseline reading performance.
Where each number comes from
| What you write | Where to find it | Beginner reminder |
|---|---|---|
| F(2, 56) = 40.06 | Program or Contrast row in the ANCOVA test table | Use the group-effect row, not the intercept. |
| p < .001 | Sig. column for the adjusted group effect | Write p < .001 when SPSS displays .000. |
| partial η² = .589 | Partial Eta Squared column | This describes the strength of the adjusted group effect. |
| Which groups differ | Bonferroni Pairwise Comparisons | Report these only after a significant omnibus result. |
Guided transfer
Practice with a new study
Build the paragraph in the same order. Do not let the pairwise results appear before the overall test.
Employee training study
A researcher compares productivity across In-Person, Hybrid, and Online training while controlling for years of experience.
Safe interpretation: The analysis shows adjusted differences in productivity. It does not prove the training format caused those differences unless the design supports causation.
ANCOVA conclusions should match adjusted means and adjusted tests.
Readers cannot understand the adjustment unless you name what was controlled.
Center the main test and only the follow-ups that matter.
Use “differed” or “remained associated” unless the design supports causation.
Chapter checkpoint
APA writing is statistical reasoning made visible. A strong paragraph centers the adjusted group effect, uses follow-ups responsibly, and tells the reader only what the design and output support.
